2010 March Newsletter

Ladies,

I look to the north when I stand on my front porch. We still have some snow in spots. On our deck I face south, the snow is all gone. While our house is not all that wide, I have two different views. Both represent this time of year but I prefer the south facing view. Why, because there are signs of spring. Clusters of green tulip tips are poking their heads up through the ground. That to me is a sure sign that spring is just around the corner. Spring is one of my favorite Utah seasons. It represents a birth, life, and a renewing of what is meaningful to me. This year I am thinking about people whose lives have been turned upside down by natural occurring events all over the world. It is overwhelming to me; I need to think on a smaller scale. What can I do that would give comfort to people who live right here in Utah? Hospitalized children need Treasure Boxes. My grandson, Alex, recently spent some time at McKay Dee. They gave him a box with play items inside. The box was an Ecco shoe box with the price still on it. Not painted at all. We need to do better. Another painted box is the Memory Box. This box is for grieving parents who will not be taking that beloved baby home with them. A Memory Box will hold their memories of a special baby. We also have injured service men away from their homes who would appreciate a painted box full of goodies? What about other members of our armed forces? Some may not support why they are away from home, but we need to support them and the job they are doing.

I encourage each of you to give of yourself, just a few hours at our May Paint-In. We will have boxes ready to be painted. All you have to do is show up with your paint supplies. We will have a lot of fun just being together, but more importantly, we will be giving of ourselves, we will be doing something for someone else.

According to our Chapter By-Laws to be a member of GSDP, you must be an active member of SDP. It was recently brought to our attention that not all of our Chapter members are meeting this requirement. In March, 2nd Vice President, Nancy Coley will obtain a list of active GSDP members from SDP. If your name is not on the list, we will have to charge you the non-member seminar fee, which will be more than the annual SDP dues. If you paid our Chapter dues, that money will be applied to the non-member seminar fee. I realize some of our members have issues with SDP, I’m sorry. But we are affiliate and do enjoy some of the perks they offer. Namely, liability insurance and the non-profit status. Our chapter is about painting and friendship, but we must follow the rules of our parent organization.

Let’s paint.

CarolAnn

CarolAnn called the metting to order at 10:00 AM by welcoming everyone and commenting on what a wonderful turn out and a great group to paint with. She asked everyone to put their phones on vibrate. She expressed condolences to Eileen Barnard and Wendy Oullette on the loss of their father.

CarolAnn announced CPA Lindsey Miller will be attending the board meeting on Thursday, 18 February to go over some of the information he suggests for the books.

She reported Mary Jane Todd was still ill and Della Wetterman will be doing the seminar in April. The project is a lunch pail with several kinds of fruit on it and another project to be decided on. Hazel Rimmasch will be teaching a rooster tin, designed by Jo Sonja, in March. A very handsome rooster.

CarolAnn went on to say we will be starting Golden Dollars, similar to the Deco points from the pass. A list of items and point values will be forthcoming. Dollars will be spent during a raffle in June/November. TBD later.

The goose has been retired and will be raffled off. A Bunny Rabbit (donated by Carol Ann), will be part of the raffle each month. The lucky winner gets to paint something on it and returns it by the next Paint-in, so another lucky winner will have some fun too. The first lucky painter was non-other than CarolAnn herself. Happy painting.

Before CarolAnn turned the meeting over to the teacher, she announced there was coffee and cookies for everyone in the kitchen. Thanks Nancy for the delicious sugar cookies.

LaRae Anderson started by explaining document boxes started after the style of Sarah Brisco and the Francis Sisters of Stevens Plains, New York. The class then settled down to paint. Everyone worked hard on their boxes and a few ladies completed their boxes. It was a great class and a beautiful piece. Thanks LaRae, great job.

Class ended around 3:00 PM.
