2010 August Newsletter Newsletter

Flow is an innately positive experience; it is known
to "produce intense feelings of enjoyment".
It is also a positive force because it allows for
            optimal performance and skill development....Wikipedia

Hi Ladies

My limited understanding of the mission of SDP and our chapter is to provide opportunities to learn new skills and techniques while enhancing those already possessed by its members. Currently, chapter members showcase all different levels of skill in decorative painting. Some of our members are advanced painters and some not so advanced. Some are teachers and while some are students, some are serious and again, some not so serious. The chapter is basically a blend of all levels of desire and skill. This sometimes makes it difficult to find projects that attract all levels and interest. So where is all this theory going. Probably nowhere, but we (I) need your input and involvement. When I became president it was my hope that we would become something more than a monthly Paint-In. I hoped that we would become a community of like minded spirits coming together for the community. One venue for this blending is the Golden Dollars Auction where we asking chapter members to share their talents. Please spend some time thinking about what you can donate for the auction. We’ll have a preview of items at the MYSTERY PAINT-IN. Please become involved.

Along the same line, I believe we can provide an venue for our members to find time just for themselves. Have you ever become so involved in a project that you lost all context of time? Some refer to that longed for feeling of being in the flow. Flow is very elusive. Wikipedia defines flow as . . . completely focused motivation. It is a single-minded immersion and represents perhaps the ultimate in harnessing the emotions in the service of performing and learning. In flow the emotions are not just contained and channeled, but positive, energized, and aligned with the task at hand. (Csikszentmihalyi)

I love to be in the flow and through my chapter participation have gained a much broader base for my creative knowledge to just let it flow. I’m not sure which chemicals the brain releases during flow, but I’ll take them anytime.

MYSTERY PAINT-IN on August 14 will be here before we know it. The surface is here, the raffle gifts are wrapped, the luncheon menu is ready and the “Mystery” is well organized. To everyone who signed up for the August Paint-In your board is excited to share this with you. Please note that the paint-in will be held at the Clearfield Community Center (where we used to hold the semi-annual seminars). We’ll be there early to set everything up for you and will open the doors for you at 9:00 a.m. sharp. I did it again; I almost forgot the last clue. It is Welcome to Checkerboard Farm. How does that fit in? You’ll have to attend to find out. So to recap the clues:

It’s black
JoSonja style
Smaller than a breadbox and larger than a pin cushion
Teacher is not from Utah
Teacher is female
Teacher's initials are MFB

ELECTION of new chapter officers for the 2011 will be held in November and announced at the Christmas party. Pat Reeder has graciously agreed to co-chair the nomination committee but we need another co-chair. Please consider volunteering. At the July board meeting I joked about calling each one of and asking three questions to which you must answer YES to at least one. The questions are.... Would you run for an office, donate an item for the auction, or teach a paint-in in 2011?So ladies, you have been warned. LOL

In case some of you missed it in the last issue of Decorative Painter, Jo-Ann Fabric and Crafts stores have again agreed to provide SDP members with a Jo-Ann VIP Discount Card. But it will not arrive in your Decorative Painter as it has in the past. Rather, effective July 10, 2010, you (members) can request a card online at or by calling toll-free at 1-877-604-2280. The new card is valid from 8/1/10-8/31/11. A Jo-Ann’s manager must validate the new card prior to first use by showing your SDP membership and a state-issued photo ID. I used my Jo-Ann’s card all the time as the 10% discount applies to the total purchase, including regular and sale-priced items. My experience is that sometimes it is honored when a 40% coupon is used and sometimes it’s not.

NEW MEMBER PERKS FROM SDP
SDP Business members DecoArt and Royal and Langnickel have generously offered to give a Decorative Painting for Everyone New Member kit to every new SDP member. This will help all of us encourage new members to join our Society and keep the decorative painting industry vital! Each new SDP member will receive a voucher in their membership packet good for one kit. The Decorative Painting for Everyone kit includes:
Set of seven Americana Acrylics and three DecoArt mediums
Set of five Royal Gold brushes and one Royal 1" sponge brush
Black and white carbon paper and tracing paper
8" by 10" clear styrene sheet that can be used for practicing brushstrokes
"Decorative Painting for Everyone" course guidebook

HANDY HINTS (see our blog site for a lot more tips)
Avoid wet palette mildew: Keep copper pennies under the sponge of your wet palette. The copper is a mildew inhibitor and will keep your sponge fresh and mildew free. (This hint came from the Siskiyou Chapter in Oregon.)

Another mildew preventative is to use distilled water to dampen the sponge and paper. (Submitted by Gloria Falk, Gateway Decorative Painters Web Site.)

Happy painting, take care and say YES.

The Chapter also needs Chairpersons for Seminars/Paint-ins, Christmas Party, Memory/Treasure Boxes, Grants/Publicity and Web/Newsletter Editor. The Chapter needs You, so please give serious thought about serving as an officer for 2011.

In CarolAnns absence, Glenda welcomed everyone to the Saturday’s paint-in at 10:40 am and reminded everyone about the August Mystery paint-in with a new clue: the teachers initials are MFB. So be sure to join in for a day of mystery and lots of fun. She also reminded everyone to be working on the donated crafts for the November auction, and to get those ugly sweaters ready for the Christmas party in December.

Glenda announced the chapter’s new blog that replaced the web/newsletter. Check it out, it is easy to maneuver and has a lot of nice features.

She then turned the meeting over to Tirzah.

Tirzah gave us a short bio on Juanita Denton and then turned the time over to her. Juanita started by demonstrating the mixes required for the peacocks nest, grasses and leaves. The bowl is a beautiful piece and Juanita will be teaching it in Seattle.

The raffle was held during the lunch break and the following people were winners of some very nice prizes:
Helen: wooden pig clock, mystery bag, box of greeting cards and a painted nut cracker
    JoLynn: a brief case
    Terry: mystery bag (2x’s)

    Judy: defuser
