2016 December Newsletter

Painters,

Wishing you peace, joy, and all the best the holiday has to offer.  May this season of giving and spending time with family and friends bring you joy that lasts throughout the year.

HO HO HO, it’s that time of year already.  The snow is on the ground and the lights are glistening.  I love Christmas time, but as always, I am not ready for all the hub bub.  Since the next message will be 2017, I will wish you all a Very Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Season Greetings and good tidings and Happy New Year.

Thanks to Eileen Barnard for teaching the Santa piece last Saturday.  We had a very small class but really enjoyed the morning painting and finished our pieces. Eileen did a great job teaching and we look forward to her teaching another class in the future.

With Deep Sadness, I report our Past President Rebecca Chaffee passed away last week.  She fought a very long and hard battle with her health but could not overcome this latest trial.  She will fly high with the Angels now and enjoy having a free and healthy spirit.  We will miss her lovely smile but will never forget her contribution to our Chapter and her friendship.

Exciting things happening in the New Year.  We have some fun classes lined up on Saturday Paint-ins and two Seminars scheduled on Apr 12-14 (Heidi England) and Sep 19-21 (Bobbie Takashima), so mark your calendars.  Two fun ladies and exciting projects.  If you see something you would like to teach, please let Tirzah know and she will get you signed up.
Thanks to everyone who participated in the election process.  No surprise, our current board was elected by acclamation with enough votes to carry a majority of our members.

 Your new/old Chapter President, Pat

2016 November Newsletter

Painters,

On behalf of your Golden Spike Board, we are wishing you a very Happy Thanksgiving!  We have truly been blessed this year with great friends, wonderful teachers to keep us going with our painting, beautiful weather (in spite of the tornado we had), and plenty of food to nourish us physically and mentally.

Don’t forget to sign up for our Christmas party on Dec 3rd at the Prairie Schooner in Ogden Utah.  We have many food choices and fun times planned.

It’s not too late to purchase raffle tickets for the gift basket that includes a tin tea set made by the renowned Canadian tin maker Robert Faulkner ( a rare find and hard to get now).  Contact our board to purchase tickets.  You do Not need to be present to win this basket.

We delivered the box of fleece throws to the Veterans Home yesterday and Wow, were they thrilled.  It was certainly a moving experience and so many thanks to all you ladies for your donations and help making the throws.  If you ever get a chance, please go to the George Wahlen Veterans Facility and visit with our Veterans.  A truly beautiful facility for our heroes.

Kudos to Lois Mueller for such a terrific Seminar last month and all the board and volunteers who helped in preparation for our event.  Thanks a million to Helen and family for the great, as usual, goody favors you made for us.  We always appreciate your hard work and Chocolate.  To all painters in our Chapter.  Lois is an amazing teacher and if you have not taken a class from her, you are certainly missing out.  What an impressive painter, excellent teacher, and interesting lady.  We hope we can have her back next year.   Thanks for all who attended and enjoyed the class and friendship of our Chapter.

Our thoughts and hugs go out to our Past President Rebecca Chaffee as she heals from a bad fall on her vacation last month.  She is still in a rehab center working on building her strength so she can come home.  Please extend your prayers on her behalf to help her heal. Many thanks to Terry Pulver for being such an Angel and priceless friend caring for her the last month.  Welcome home Terry.  We have really missed you and your blog updates.

As your Board, we have been working on next year’s classes and feel we have a super group of teachers lined up for you.  Please watch our Blog each month and see what we have to offer and come participate and paint with us.  As of right now, we have two Seminars lined up, Apr (Heidi England) and Sept (Bobbie Takashima), so mark your calendars.  Two fun ladies and exciting projects.

I know we thought they were over…. But our Elections for Your Golden Spike board are upon us.  Please don’t forget to vote by email or at the Sat paint-in on Nov 26th.  If you would like to run for an office, we would love to have you.  Contact Nancy Coley at 801-698-0418 to have your name listed on the ballot.  Thanks ahead of time.

One last Note. Its time again for Chapter Dues.

Don’t forget to SMILE.

Pat

November

Father Christmas Plate

Teacher:       Eileen Barnard
Cost:            $7.50 (class fee)
Surface:       Provide your own surface
Date:            November 26th (Saturday) 9:00 am to 1:00 pm (NOTE: TIME CHANGE)
(setup and chat time 8:30-9:00)

Palette: Deco Art.
Asphaltum         Prussian Blue
Blue Harbor      Sable Brown
Dove Grey        Spiced Pumpkin
Lamp Black      Titanium White
Mustard Seed   Warm White
Medium Flesh
Country Red (or any type of red you like to use for blush)

Prep Instructions:
To seal your surface, use a dry small foam roller and apply a coat of gesso to the surface. Once it is coated, add more gesso to the roller and roll it here and there on the surface to create more texture. Rinse out the gesso and squeeze out water with a paper towel. You don't want water in the roller because it acts as a leveling agent and you want texture on this piece. When the gesso is dry, roll on a coat of Harbor Blue. When this coat is completely dry, apply a generous coat of retarder to the surface. Using a large brush, apply a coat of Prussian Blue to the surface. Use a large mop brush to blend it in with the Prussian Blue. Rinse out your mop brush and towel dry it quickly. Apply a small amount of Sable Brown up in the left corner of your piece in the vicinity of where the large star will go. Pounce this out with your mop brush. Let your surface completely dry and apply a coat of clear glaze medium. Apply your pattern when the glaze is dry. Base in the Santa's coat with Sable Brown and do the first coat of the lettering with Warm White. Tracey's tip to lettering is: pull each segment in one stroke like writing with a pen...it's a fluid movement. Instead of painting it in. Also, base in the star with Warm White.

The Paint-in will be held at the Westwood Village Clubhouse (1111 N. 2000 W., Farr West, UT).Take I-15 #346 and go north on 2000 W/UT-126 0.6 of mile. The Clubhouse is on the west side of the street with parking on the west side of the building.
