2018 January Newsletter

Happy New Year!

I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year with your Family and Friends.

I want to thank everyone who attended our 2017 Christmas Party. It was a festive affair as always and it was nice to see everyone enjoy the food, the games and the company. Many thanks to Nancy Coley and Rosina Lettre for coming up with the games, the raffles and favors. Helen you did an outstanding job on the sleigh table favors.

Thanks to everyone for painting with the chapter through out the year. I hope we will see you again in 2018. We have some exciting new projects and teachers scheduled for 2018. We have pooled talents from California, Nevada and Texas as well as our own local artists. New techniques will be introduced in the months of May and September and in the month of February a pen and ink project will be taught.

I am looking forward to the exciting happenings for 2018. Check out our Blog and come join us to expand your painting skills and friendship among some of the best local artist.

2018 Paint-ins
The Board would like some input from the Chapter members about next year's Paint-ins and Seminars. What kind and style of projects would you like to paint? Who would you like as teachers? Would you willing to teach a class and if so, what would you teach? Please give this some serious thought. We are here for You. Contact any of the Board members with your ideas.

Chapter Dues
Yes, it's that time of year again. I'm sure most of you have received notice from SDP about your national membership renewal with your last Decorative Painters magazine. National dues need to be postmarked before December 1st to avoid their $5 postage/handling fee.  (Pay SDP dues directly to the Society.)

It is time to pay your 2018 local dues ($15). Checks can be made out to Golden Spike Decorative Painters and mailed to the Chapter at 295 W Center Street, PO 302 Willard, UT 84340.

Christmas Party Raffle Winners
The winner of the alder wood Norwegian Head Dress storage box box filled with painting supplies was Wendy Ouellette. The winner of the original watercolor by Juanita Denton was Terry Pulver. Gloria Eldridge won the seminar certifiate and Eileen Barnard won the Paint-in certificate. Pat Reeder won the "Loosers" gift card. Wendy and Gloria also won gift cards as winners of the Christmas Triva games. Poinsettas were won by Pat, Lydia, Tirzah, Carol and Terry.

Raffles
This year we would like to ask all members to bring a NICE raffle item. You will receive two Christmas raffle tickets for your item. Painting supplies like palette paper, brushes, and tracing paper are always welcome as are nice wood or metal surfaces. Other items could include potted plants and candy. If you would like to receive it, it will probably make a good raffle item.

Christmas Raffles
This year at our Christmas Party we will again be having special raffle. It will be an signed original bentwood box by John Dunn generously donated to the Chapter by Carol Hillier. The Decorative Painting world lost one of the most well known folk artists with the death of John Dunn last year. John painted in the Peter Ompir Style as well as his own style. His works can be found in museums, is highly prized buy collectors, and commands high prices.
This year's winner will be lucky indeed.

Tickets will be on sale from now until the drawing at the party. The cost is $1.00 per ticket. You do NOT have to be present to win.

Rosemaling Coast to Coast
Save the date: June 26-28, 2018 (Tuesday-Thursday)

An association entitled "Rosemaling Coast to Coast” has been formed to plan and execute a convention by the same name. We are extending an invitation to you to become a member of the association and assist in making this, our first rosemaling convention in Decorah, Iowa a huge success.

The venue will be Luther College, with everything in a very compact area. We have reserved a dorm that holds 250 people. Across the street from the dorm is the Main Building, which has 12 classrooms. Across the street from the Main Building is the Centennial Union where the vendors will be. Our breakfast and lunch will be served in this building, as will one special evening event. The rooms and meals will be very reasonably priced.

One evening we will have a special event at Vesterheim, "A Night at the Museum." During this evening we can view the 2018 National Exhibition of Folk Art in the Norwegian Tradition and tour the museum itself. It will be a unique event.

We will keep you updated on what is happening as we progress toward the convention. We will need many volunteers, before, during, and after the event. We will be providing a list of areas of tasks so you can select one or two that you would like to become involved with.

The first thing you need to do is become a member of "Rosemaling Coast to Coast". We already have over 20 members from the West Coast. To become a member send $15 with your name, address, phone numbers, and email address to Ruth Green, 309 1st Street, Decorah, IA 52101. Make checks payable to Rosemaling Coast to Coast. Membership is from the date you sign up through the first convention year of 2018.

The email address is very important. We would prefer to contact you using that method, because it would be much less expensive to use email than USPS for keeping you up to date. (If you do not have email, we will then mail information to you.) For additional information, please contact: Lois Mueller, nordic@mhtc.net or Betty Dowe, bettydowe@harmonytel.net
