 2020 December Newsletter

Hello Ladies!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!!!  I miss you all and want to start painting again.  2020 certainly was a tough year.  Hopefully 2021 will be better.

I look forward to the Heidi England seminar where she will be teaching "3D Old World Christmas Village," next fall.

May you all have a very Merry Christmas!!!

Helen

Every year in past the Chapter would be getting ready for our Christmas party, but like so much else this year, things have changed. Still, we want to remember our members and thank them for their support and for 'hanging in' this year. So, in place of a Christmas luncheon, this year the Board has decided to give all of last year's members their 2021 Golden Spike Chapter Dues. It's only a little thing, and we would rather get together with all of you, but it is the Board's way of saying Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

2020 Chapter Elections

Below is a list of The Chapter's current officers. Due to Covid, we have not been able to meet or hold elections for new officers this year. So the Board has a question for all members. Would you like to keep the current officers until the pandemic is over and we can get together again or would you rather have an on-line election and if so who would you like to nominate? You can email your responses to Terry at tpulver1@weber.edu.

President -    Helen Mahoney
1st VP -         Pat Reeder

2nd VP -        Nancy Coley
Treasurer -    Gloria Eldridge
Secretary -     Nancy Litz

National Chapter Dues

Yes, it's that time of year again. I'm sure most of you have received notice from SDP about your National Membership renewal with your last Decorative Painters magazine. National Dues need to be postmarked before December 1st  to avoid their $5 postage/handling fee. (Pay SDP dues directly to the Society.)

 2020 November Newsletter

Hello Ladies,

Can you believe Thanksgiving is just around the corner.  Where did the year go?  I certainly miss painting with the group.  This has been a hard year for everyone.

Art has always been a reflection of society and what society is going through (boy, I can't wait to see how people have expressed themselves during this pandemic.)   Online classes have become popular.  I saw that Jillybean, Donna Dewberry, and other artists have been offering online courses as well as the Society of Decorative Painters (SDP).  Online is a good option, but there is nothing like taking a course with other artists.

Until then, stay sane and pray 2021 is better!!!

Helen

A big thanks to everyone who have shared their pictures with us. We would love to see what the rest of you have been doing. So email them to us so we can post them in the next newsletter.

I know many of you have done little or no painting for any number of reasons, but we would like to hear from you. So drop me a email or text to let us know how you and yours are doing and we will post it next month. It's not the same as being together, but it will help keep us closer.

Steve and I are doing well. That's because we haven't gone much of any place since this Covid thing started, not even the grocery store. I have my groceries delivered. Haven't even seem our family much, so I am getting really board, but at least we have stayed safe.

I haven't been doing any painting. My painting room as gotten kind of a mess, so I am starting to clean it up and so I can start working on some of my projects again. Hope we can get together to paint soon, until then stay safe everyone.

Carol D.

I have been crocheting shawls. Did a paint by number. Everyone is doing well here at the center. Hope all is well.

Gloria E.

Don and I are doing fine, thought Don is getting a bit unsteady on his feet and  a bit more forgetful. That big wind storm really hit hard here. Lots of trees and branches down. I lost a big limb in my walnut, but fortunately it got hung up in the tree and did not do any damage. We were lucky, even if we were without power for about a week.

Haven't done any painting. That raccoon did a number on the ceiling of my paint room and I haven't been able to get it repaired what with all the Covid stuff going on. I really miss everyone and hope to see you soon. If we can't get together before then, have a happy and safe holiday season.

Pat R.

As the rest of you Bob and I are staying in and bored. We did scoot off to Flaming Gorge twice with our daughter and her girls and totally enjoyed the beauty of the great outdoors and animals. I am painting a Jillybean Santa right now and will post when finished. I haven't painted since Feb so this is refreshing for my soul. Bob was in hospital this weekend with pancreatitis so my second eye surgery had to be rescheduled to the end of Nov but will be ok. He is home on a liquid diet. Doing much better and I still have him so life is good. Love and miss you all. Stay safe and healthy out there my dear friends

Sandy R.

Doing fine here. I haven't done much painting since out last paint-in in February. I finished painting the mirror, but haven't antiqued it. I did get a few of trips in this summer, a couple to Idaho to see family and a trip along the Columbia River. It was really nice, but pretty much everything was closed due to Covid. I will be very glad when this year is over and hope next year will be better. Take care all.

Seeking Decorative Painter

Hello,

I Googled toll painting and discovered the Decorative Painters Society and located your email. We live in Salt Lake and my wife and I will be celebrating an anniversary soon.

Many years ago one of the craft projects done at craft stores was to glue very thick wood letters together forming individual's names. We have five children and I don't recall whether my wife did this object or whether a friend did, but we have all of our children's names in wood letters stacked on top of each other and it has hung in our home for many years.

At first it was toll painted and only had four names. Then a fifth son arrived and we could not leave him out so we added his name on top. But the toll painting was covered up. Actually, the toll painting style back then was just decorative paint dots.

I would like to pay someone to decorate the object as a surprise for my wife. It has a very sentimental meaning for her. The letters are about an inch and a half thick and it measures approximately twenty inches square.

Do you feel you could recommend someone I might approach? Do painters specialize in certain styles?

Best,

Dennis Lawrence

2020 October Newsletter

Hello Friends,

I can't believe that another month has passed and we have not gotten together, I miss you all tremendously, I hope all of this ends shortly and we are meeting once again! Keep your spirits up.

Thank you for all of the pictures that have been sent. Seeing what others ate doing is one of the lights in the darkness.

Until we can paint again, keep your chin up and stay sane!!!

Helen

Hope all is good with you in these times.  Have been doing Zoom classes with my local SDP Chapters to stay sane – ha!  The ‘new’ normal for now.

First photo is a design by Lori Larkey using her ‘dry’ brush technique – it was an interesting & fun process.  The train was something I did for fun for Christmas the design is by Lisbeth Stull.

Maxine T.

Just finished a larger version of my ornament.

Judy S.

I hope that this finds you well. This was a project I finished this year.

Lydia G.

Hi, I haven't done any painting since the second week in June. I fell and fractured my left hand, had to wear a cast. Then it must have the triggered kidney stones I didn't know I had. Oh what a painful ordeal (worse then 2020). I had to have laser lithotripsy to pulverize the big one (two times). No fun! Finally starting to feel better. Maybe one day we'll get together and paint again, I hope it's soon. Everyone stay safe and paints your hearts out.

Before all of the fun I did get the bird house gourd by Julie Grant and Cindy Pray ready for class. I also had fun making a pink pig out of terracotta pots of various sizes. It's cute to put  in a flower bed or whatever.

 2020 September Newsletter

Hello Ladies,

I hope everyone can send pictures of their work!  It helps keep us inspired.  It is nice being connected with other artists and it motivates us to do more.  It has been hard to pick up a paintbrush during all of this chaos.   I hope the pictures inspire us to continue and not give up!

Until we paint again!!!  (Together!!)

Helen

A big thanks to everyone who have shared their pictures with us. We would love to see what the rest of you have been doing. So email them to us so we can post them in the next newsletter.

Eileen B. & Wendy O.

Hope you're doing well. Eileen and I took a virtual class from Michelle Walton and we painted these Hope chests. We're working on her fairy tale clock now. Take care and hopefully this isolation will end soon so we can resume painting together.

Marilyn H.

We are doing fine. My oldest granddaughter begins at Utah State. I have taken Zoom classes from Sandy McTier as well as painted some little gourds.

Helen M.

It has been so long since I painted.  I just started painting again this last week (first time since January.)  It has just been such a busy time with moving, keeping my girls (and myself) sane!  Painting relieves the stress, and I am so glad I started again.  Practice makes perfect. Here are two of the 3 wooden wreaths I have painted.

Tirzah P.

Had great plans for myself, Julie and my sister from Australia to fly to Rome and take advantage of the painting class with Carol Sphon in Tuscany this fall and also a last class with JoSonja in October but since both were postponed till next year I have done nothing except finish many of my UFO!!! Many from many years ago! Many, many, many years!!! Here are just a few of the pieces I have finished thanks to Covid!

Sending basket and stool by Michelle (from many years ago), Sandy's drink dispenser (even used that for the fourth), Russian pair of sandwich boards and hanger, Ruth Green Rosemaled box, Goradetz plate, Jo's whale plate and Helen Jeglick tray.

Terry P.

All is well here. As many of you know, my family love their light boxes with the removable panels that I have been painting for them. So I have kept busy painting more. I have finished the 12 month + 2 set for all six of the boxes. Here is a sample of the 20+ I have completed since February including the autumn leaf cascade I designed and had cut for me. Also here is the owl I was to have taught this fall.
