 2024 July Newsletter

From the Office of the President:

June’s paint-in and potluck reminded me of some of the traditions the club had such as potluck lunches for the seminars. It was really nice to paint and socialize with everyone and it truly felt like one of those seminar luncheons. We had a few folks who came just to visit and partake in the delicious spread. We enjoyed your company. It is always nice to conversate and get to know everyone on a different level.

As I looked around the room, I began to reminisce on faces that were absent, those that

are no longer part of the club or those who have passed. Everyone has left some sort of
imprint whether it is from the paint projects, shared experiences or memorable moments
of paint mishaps.

Are there traditions that we need to bring back that we have somehow forgotten about?

I know that on our blog we have a recipe folder and back in the day recipes were once
shared and sadly we have gotten away from that tradition. What is your favorite memory
or experience with the club? Does anyone have any old photographs that they would
like to share with us?

The board does hope to weave some of those traditions in with our mission statement.
The board will convene later this month and that meeting will provide an opportunity to
identify the mission statement as well as prepare for our upcoming seminar with Lise
Lorentzen.

At the potluck we all voted on our favorite candle pattern for Terry’s July candle class.

The pattern is a ribbon with bells and Terry’s rendition of it came out beautiful. I can’t
wait to paint it. The candles would make a nice Christmas gift. With that being said, we
can start a tradition of Christmas in July for a paint-in. We can paint Christmas in other
months as well, but the Christmas in July has been a fun and catchy retail theme for
many years now. Why not participate?

Merry painting,

LeeAnn Washatka, President

2024 Seminars and Paint-ins

GSDP Paint-ins will now be the third Saturday of the month.

August 17th (Saturday)                  – Marilyn Healy - Watercolor Cards
September 5th - 7th (Thur-Sat)      – Lise Lorentzen Seminar

November 16th (Saturday)             – Pat Reeder - TBA
December 14th (Saturday)             – Christmas Party - Hug Hes (Syracuse)

Raffles
This year we would like to ask our members to bring a NICE raffle item or two. Painting supplies like palette paper, brushes, and tracing paper are always welcome as are nice small or medium sized wood or metal surfaces. Other items could include potted plants and painting books. If you would like to receive it, it will probably make a good raffle item. If you have some gently used brushes, they would also be welcome to have on hand for beginners.

Christmas Raffles

This year at our Christmas Party we will again be having a very special raffle. It is a beautiful box painted by Gayle Oram. Gayle is internationally recognized as a rosemaling painter and has been awarded a Gold Medal in Rosemaling from Vestereim. Her works are highly prized by all lovers of Norwegian Rosemaling and are today's and tomorrow's collectables.

Tickets will be on sale from now until the drawing at the party. The cost is $1.00 per ticket. You do NOT have to be present to win.

July
Jingle Bell Candle Painting design by Jo Avis Moore

Teacher:        Terry Pulver
Cost:              $7.50 (class fee)
Surface:         3x6 or 3x8 pillar candle
Date:             July 20th 10:00 am
(setup and chat time 9:30-10:00)

Palette: Americana
Country Red          Tiger Lilly
Brilliant Red           Antique Maroon
Marigold                Cad Yellow
Hauser Green Lt   Hauser Green Med
Hauser Green Dk  Burnt Umber
Lamp Black           White

Other Supplies:
Rubbing Alcohol
Paint Adhesion Medium (provided by the instructor)

Hint: Painting on white candles helps keep the colors true and makes basecoating easier.

Prep Instructions:

Clean candle thoroughly with a paper towel dampened with rubbing alchohol. Wipe dry with another paper towel. Avoid touching the candle because the oils from your hands may hamper the  Paint Adhesion Medium's ability to stick.

Apply the pattern using graphic paper and a stylus. Use light pressure to prevent denting the candle. If you have problems getting the graphic to transfer to the candle, paint the candle with equal amounts of Paint Adhesion Medium and White and allow to dry completely before applying the patten (see note below).

Basecoat ribbon in Country Red, leaves in Hauser Green Med and bells in Marigold (It may take 2 coats). Mix colors with equal amounts of Paint Adhesion Medium. This will provide a solid smooth background for the design.

Note: You only need Paint Adhesion Medium where the paint touches the wax surface of the candle. After basecoating, it is no longer necessary to add the medium to the following layers of paint. If you paint areas (vines) that are not basecoated, you will need to mix equal amounts of Paint Adhesion Medium to your paint.
