 2024 October Newsletter

From the Office of the President

September’s seminar was a seminar to remember. We hosted Lise Lorentzen who recently earned her gold medal in Rosemaling from Vesterheim. I have never rosemaled before and had a lot of anxiety about struggling or not being able to finish my projects and if I did finish what would they look like?

Lise is very personable and has a background in teaching students who have learning challenges. Lise used her skills of being able to break down instructions into manageable pieces. I truly enjoyed the seminar and my anxiety very quickly went away. Lise made rosemaling easy. She was a delight and there was zero stress. One of her mottos is “it’s just paint”.

Everyone enjoyed the seminar and had voiced requests for Lise to return. It was exciting to see that even those who have had many years of rosemaling gained new insights and techniques. You can check Lise out on her You Tube channel “Art of Lise” where you can learn basic strokes and more. You can also take part in one of her zoom classes on Rosemaling.com or through the Vesterheim museum. Additionally, rosemaling.com has a section of recorded classes that are free.

On the last day of the seminar, I was able to speak with the seminar group about honoring our heritage and acknowledging our members. Members were presented with an art doll or in Winston’s case an art guy to paint. The dress on the doll or the legs on the guy had drilled holes to hold charms that represent years as a member. The charms consist of paintbrushes, palette knives and paint palettes. See attached photo. We wanted to be able to recognize our members and share the pride of what has been built the last 38 years. Every member will receive a charm for their first year of membership and then a new charm for every 5 years in the club. If you were unable to attend the seminar, I have an art doll and your charms set aside. Come see me at either a paint-in or at the Christmas party.

We want to give a special thank you to Lindsay and Winston Bruns, OnyaTolmasoff, Scotty Foster, and all of those who have supported GSDP with donations of time and items over this and past years. We also want to thank the companies who have supported us this year, Chroma Paints, Silver Brushes, Cupboard Distributing and StudioR12 Stencils. We couldn't do what we do without you. Thanks again!!! (See these and many other web pages on the link page of the newsletter.)

The seminar offered many fellowship opportunities and I had a wonderful time getting to know some of our members more in depth. We are very fortunate to have such amazing people within our club, thank you for being you.

Rosemaling pieces completed,

LeeAnn Washatka, President

 2024 September Newsletter

From the Office of the President:

This year I have been unconsciously writing with a collective theme regarding our founding roots, heritage and legacy.

With the past comes the present and with the present we try to predict and anticipate the future. I say this to acknowledge and recognize the many different generations within our own club and what these different generations contribute. We have theTraditionalists, Boomers, Generation X and Gen Alpha. Interesting enough we don’t have Gen Y which is the Millennial group or Gen Z.

Generations are named based upon the historical events that occur within that time period.

Traditionalists tend to be leaders, expect to be followed and respected. They are the ones that laid the foundation for our technological advancements. Traditionalists tend to believe that the answer lies within the traditions of one’s community.

Boomers believe in volunteerism and perhaps that is why the majority of the board is comprised of Boomers. Boomers are patriotic and believe that anything is possible including change. Boomers taught their children to be independent.

Gen Xers are resourceful and the first generation to use home computers. They are

goal oriented, independent and skeptical of authority. Gen X likes structure and appreciates regular feedback. Your president is a Gen X and loves your feedback.

Our youngest member is Generation Alpha. Generation Alpha represents the digital era and growing up during a pandemic. By the time our Generation Alpha member becomes an adult, she will have shaped our club with digital media. Generation Alpha will demonstrate different social views, practice inclusivity and acceptance, at levels exceeding the previous generations and will be highly educated. Generation Alpha will leave its imprint on the club in a transformative way.

I mention the different generations because we all communicate differently and hold values differently. But are we really that different, or is it the path that we take to get to the same destination different?

Our growth, evolution and change will be incorporated into generational norms. We can continue to hold onto some of the foundational pieces that brought this club together while trying out what the young cool kids are doing.

With the generations there is always an alignment. You just have to listen for it. No matter what generation you belong to, we are all hard wired for connection and belonging.

Our Vice President and myself have been very busy putting together some creative ideas that we will begin to unveil at the September seminar and at the Christmas party. It is our goal to incorporate heritage and belonging into two projects that we have been working on. If you are not attending the seminar, you will still be privy to the September reveal. I can’t wait to share.

If you are feeling disconnected from our club, reach out and we are happy to help find a role for you. If there are topics that you would like addressed in the newsletter, please email those to me.

Creatively inspired,

LeeAnn Washatka, President
