2012 January Newsletter

Happy New Year Everyone!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and the beginnings of a great New Year.

Hello, I'm Lydia Gossett, the Chapter's new President for 2012. The rest of the board members are 1st VP - Pat Reeder, 2nd VP - Gloria Eldridge, Treasurer - Eileen Barnard, Blog - Terry Pulver, Seminar/Paint-in Coordinator - Tirzah Probasco, and Secretary - Sandy Reeder.

Since I'm new at this, I welcome suggestions for future projects and activities to add to the great list of teachers and projects we have already started for 2012. Come and join us for a fun time at the Westwood Village Club House every fourth Saturday of the month at 10 am.

Speaking of fun, the Chapter's Christmas Party was held at the Prairie Schooner. We enjoyed a delicious lunch, played a couple of games provided by Eileen, had fun stealing ornaments from others during the Ornament Exchange, and visiting with old friends. Past President Rebecca Chaffee joined us as well as Rita Johnson, and Rosina Lettre. Rosina has been busy chairing a new cook book titled "Simply Our Best II" sponsored by the group called "Top of Utah NewComers". If you're interested in a new cook book, get in touch with Rosina.

We missed those who were unable to attend and look forward to next year's party and the rest of 2012. Lets make this Chapter strong and a fun place to meet old friends and paint.

See you on January 28th for Wendy's Valentine Plate.

Lydia

2012 Chapter Service Project
This year again, the Chapter will be continuing the Food Drive as our Community Service Project. Last year was very successful and we hope to do even better this year. Members are urged to bring items for the Food Bank to each Paint-in and Seminar they attend. (See our Food Bank Donations Guideline page for information on acceptable items or go the the Utah Food Bank web site for more information.) There is a lot of need, so we hope everyone will support this effort.

February
Garden Seed Box by Eileen Barnard
Teacher: Eileen Barnard
Cost:       $7.50 (class fee only)
                 TBA Seed box
Date:       February 25th, 10 am
                (setup and chat time 9:30-10:00)

Palette: Sonja
Tarragon (BG)*       Storm Blue
Brown Earth            Vines (BG)
Yellow Green           Provincial Beige
Espresso (BG)        Lilac (BG)
Burnt Umber            Seedlings (BG)
Warm White            Mustard Seed (BG)
Shamrock (BG)       Red Violet Primrose (BG)

*Background colors

Prep Instructions:
Base bottom of box with Shamrock. Doing one side at a time, brush on a liberal amount of JoSonja’s retarder. Then put on one coat of Vines. Take a piece of Saran/Cling wrap and lay loosely over the top. Should be wrinkled. Press down on the wrinkles with your fingers then slowly lift the wrap off and discard. This is to give an appearance of branches behind the bee’s skeps. Let this side dry before doing the next. You can use a hairdryer to speed up your drying time.

Base the top of the box with Espresso.

Apply the pattern.

You will need a good #2 round and a 10/0 or 18/0 liner. You may also want to use a small angle brush for shading.

A couple of notes:
(1) If you would prefer a bluer box, you could substitute Stillwater and Raindrop for the Tarragon and Vines. Use the darkest color first.
(2) Don’t go out and buy all of the rest of the colors (beyond basing), you are welcome to use mine. I will have all of the colors there and it only takes just a smidge of each paint to do this box. If you don’t have the basing colors, you could use DecoArt’s Hauser Dark Green and Hauser Med Green in place of the Tarragon and Vines. Use the darkest color first. You could base your lid with my Espresso during class.

Note: Eileen ordered the bee knob on the box from "myknobs.com"

The Paint-in will be held at the Westwood Village Clubhouse (1111 N. 2000 W., Farr West, UT).Take I-15 #346 and go north on 2000 W/UT-126 0.6 of mile. The Clubhouse is on the west side of the street with parking on the west side of the building.
