2017 February Newsletter

Painters,

Happy Valentines all you beautiful painters. Feb is the month of love and friendship; a necessity to a successful painting chapter is a Love of painting and being able to enjoy friendships.

We had a wonderful heart class taught by Terry at our January paint-in.  Thanks for taking your time to share your painting knowledge, ideas, and expertise with us. We appreciate all your help.

Be sure and check out our line-up for 2017 classes and seminars.  Coming up this month we have Helen Mahoney teaching us a Pierre Ompir style piece on your own choice of surface.  It’s really nice and will be fun to do.  Please come and support her.

Don’t forget we have Lisa Peck teaching us the apple basket, Heidi England in April, Bobbie Takashima in Oct.  WOW. A great line-up.

One last Note. It’s time again for Chapter Dues.  Please send them to our membership coordinator, Nancy Coley.  PAINTERS: Please send Nancy your National Membership Number if you have a current one.

Pat Reeder

2017 Paint-ins
The Board would like some input from the Chapter members about next year's Paint-ins and Seminars. What kind and style of projects would you like to paint? Who would you like as teachers? Would you willing to teach a class and if so, what would you teach? Please give this some serious thought. We are here for You. Contact any of the Board members with your ideas.

Raffles
This year we would like to ask all members to bring a NICE raffle item. You will receive two Christmas raffle tickets for your item. Painting supplies like palette paper, brushes, and tracing paper are always welcome as are nice wood or metal surfaces. Other items could include potted plants and candy. If you would like to receive it, it will probably make a good raffle item.

Christmas Raffle

This year at our Christmas Party we will again be having a special raffle. It will be an original watercolor by Juanita Denton. Tickets will be on sale from now until the drawing at the party. The cost is $1.00 per ticket or 6 for $5.00. You do NOT have to be present to win.

When dry, mix Raw Umber + Burnt Sienna + touch of Carbon Black with water to form a transparent mix. This watery mix is painted over the entire surface. Let dry several hours or overnight. Dampen a with spray bottle of water. Gently scrub with 3M green scrubby. When some of the paint starts to come off, wipe with a paper towel. The results should look like there are years of dirt between the grooves of paint. Do not try to take too much paint off at once. Respray and scruf off in layers. Leave it a little darker in the areas between the two paint colors. When the paint looks dirty and old, seal with a coat of glaze and dry. Transfer the design to surface.

Rosemaling Coast to Coast
Save the date: June 26-28, 2018 (Tuesday-Thursday)

An association entitled "Rosemaling Coast to Coast” has been formed to plan and execute a convention by the same name. We are extending an invitation to you to become a member of the association and assist in making this, our first rosemaling convention in Decorah, Iowa a huge success.

The venue will be Luther College, with everything in a very compact area. We have reserved a dorm that holds 250 people. Across the street from the dorm is the Main Building, which has 12 classrooms. Across the street from the Main Building is the Centennial Union where the vendors will be. Our breakfast and lunch will be served in this building, as will one special evening event. The rooms and meals will be very reasonably priced.

One evening we will have a special event at Vesterheim, "A Night at the Museum." During this evening we can view the 2018 National Exhibition of Folk Art in the Norwegian Tradition and tour the museum itself. It will be a unique event.

We will keep you updated on what is happening as we progress toward the convention. We will need many volunteers, before, during, and after the event. We will be providing a list of areas of tasks so you can select one or two that you would like to become involved with.

The first thing you need to do is become a member of "Rosemaling Coast to Coast". We already have over 20 members from the West Coast. To become a member send $15 with your name, address, phone numbers, and email address to Ruth Green, 309 1st Street, Decorah, IA 52101. Make checks payable to Rosemaling Coast to Coast. Membership is from the date you sign up through the first convention year of 2018.

The email address is very important. We would prefer to contact you using that method, because it would be much less expensive to use email than USPS for keeping you up to date. (If you do not have email, we will then mail information to you.) For additional information, please contact: Lois Mueller, nordic@mhtc.net or Betty Dowe, bettydowe@harmonytel.net
