From the Office of the President:
Recently
I had the opportunity to talk about our club at work and I started to
wonder
more
about the origins of the club. I learned about the start of the club
with past
conversations
that I have had with Tirzah. I realized that many of our members may
not
know
how our club was founded and how it has evolved through the last 38
years.
After
the conclusion of our last board meeting, I took the opportunity to
interview Tirzah.
Tirzah
indicated that she was attending classes at a shop called the Tole
Cottage. After 2
years of taking classes, 11 people met at Frontier Pies and decided
to create the
chapter.
We were the second chapter out of five formed chapters in the state
of Utah
and
the membership dues were $5.00. We are currently the only remaining
club with a
very
modest annual dues of $15.00. Four of the original members were also
members
of
the National Society of Decorative Painters. The annual fee was
$50.00 which was a
lot
of money in 1986.
Tirzah
fondly recalls the first painted project was on a cookie tin.
In
1991, a national convention was held in Salt Lake City. Tirzah showed
us a beautiful
name
tag that was created for that event. The theme of the event was
“Celebrate the
Season”.
Tirzah remembers that there were large painted figures of a rabbit,
Santa and
Uncle
Sam.
As
a board we recently reviewed our mission statement and the question
was asked if
the
mission statement or goals have evolved since that time. Tirzah
stated that the
original
goal of the chapter was pretty much the same as today’s. The goal
was to have
camaraderie
and to learn to paint. Today’s mission statement is much more
lengthy:
“Educate
the community on the traditions of decorative folk art painting and
to preserve
these
cultural legacies for future generations. We are dedicated to
creating an inclusive
space
to connect, create and inspire one another while fostering a vibrant
community”.
Funny
how everything changes, but it doesn’t; we just transform it.
We
have many talented painters within our group and some published
authors including
Juanita
Denton who was one of the original 11 and Maxine Thomas whom we all
know
and
love.
Tirzah
shared some of her favorite memories including teaching and staying
at Utah
State
University dormitory. Tirzah recalls teaching a paint design on a
bank bag.
Through
the years there have been many potlucks and Tirzah’s favorite
recipe is the
pea
casserole by Wendy Ouellette. We may have to bring this recipe back
to a future
potluck
for everyone to sample.
Tirzah
does indicate that her fondest memories are getting together with of
all the
people
that she has met through the years. I must agree that this has been
one of mine
as
well.
While
listening to Tirzah, these memories come to life as I can picture all
these women
coming
together with this mission and not realizing how impactful and
lasting the
decision
to create a chapter would be. I don’t know if any of these women
would have
thought
that they were creating a legacy that has continued for the last 38
years.
I
previously wrote about legacy in looking at how to preserve and
ensure the longevity
of
this movement. Legacy is truly more than ensuring something continues
but also
about
the memories created with those present and past and how we as a club
lived our
dash.

2024 Seminars and Paint-ins
Due to conflicts with Westwood Village needs,
GSDP Paint-ins will now be the third Saturday of the month.

Christmas Raffles
This year at our Christmas Party we will again be having a very special raffle. It is a beautiful box painted by Gayle Oram. Gayle is internationally recognized as a rosemaling painter and has been awarded a Gold Medal in Rosemaling from Vestereim. Her works are highly prized by all lovers of Norwegian Rosemaling and are today's and tomorrow's collectables.
Tickets will be on sale from now until the drawing at the party. The cost is $1.00 per ticket. You do NOT have to be present to win.

Supplies:
Marilyn will bring pallets with the watercolors on them.
Each person attending needs a Black permanent liner like IDentiPen 1.0mm or other brand, as long as it is permanent. Pencil, eraser, transfer paper and paper towels and water container.
Brushes:
Round brush like size 8. (I have a Princeton myself).You will also need a liner brush for small details.
The Paint-in will be held at the Westwood Village Clubhouse (1111 N. 2000 W., Farr West, UT).Take I-15 #346 and go north on 2000 W/UT-126 0.6 of mile. The Clubhouse is on the west side of the street with parking on the west side of the building.
September Lise Lorentzen Seminar
Lise
is a Vesterheim Gold Metal winner for 2024

Surface: The wood for the plate, sign, pictures, patterns, instructions and paints are
included in the seminar price.

Seminar: There is a $50 non-refundable deposit. The deposit must be received by August 15th to hold your spot in the class. The check should be made out to Golden Spike Decorative Painters and mailed to GSDP care of Pat Reeder at 470 W 4900 S, Washington Terrace, UT 84405.
Any remaning seminar balance must be paid when you pickup your surfaces, pictures, patterns and instructions.
You will be notified of the date and location of pickup.

Lunches
are
included in the seminar price and will consist of chicken or steak
bowls with rumbi rice and assorted vegetables from Rumbi
Island Grill.
Turkey or roast beef sandwitch, or chicken
wrap, all with pasta salad and cookie from
Hug
Hess. Buffet
style taco bar with chicken or sweet pork, pinto beans, rice, salad,
dressing, pico de gallo and flour tortillas from
Cafe Rio. (Please note that we are unable to accomodate individual
dietary needs.) Bottled water will also be provided.

The Seminar will be held in the classroom of Wimmers' Sewing and Vaccum (1077 E, Gentile Street, Layton, UT). Exit I-15 at Layton Parkway, exit #330. Use the left 2 lanes to turn left onto 425 S Fort Lane. Then turn right onto E Gentile Street and continue east 75' then turn right again. In 121' turn left and Wimmer's will be on the right. There is parking around the building.

(If you want a spindle, contact Tirzah at 801-336-7900 by September 10th and mail a check for $22 to GSDP care of Pat Reeder at 470 W 4900 S, Washington Terrace, UT 84405 by September 15th. Spindles must be ordered by September 15th and you will be notified when and where to pickup yours.)
